AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ Functions and Features

Features of Fluorinated Water and Oil Repellent Agents

Water resistance occurs when surface tension (surface energy) of the solid surface is lower than the liquid surface tension. (* See diagram )
The perfluoroalkyl group (Rf group) exhibits very low surface tension. Solid surfaces coated by Rf groups resist not only water-soluble liquids (such as water, coffee, or milk) but also highly-active and aggressive liquids such as oil, alcohol, and gasoline.
Fluorinated water/oil repellant agents are recognized as superior to wax or silicone agents because of their excellent stability and durability in real-world conditions.

General Chemical Structure of the AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™

The perfluoroalkyl group (Rf group) exhibits very low surface tension. Solid surfaces coated by Rf groups resist not only water-soluble liquids (such as water, coffee, or milk) but also highly-active and aggressive liquids such as oil, alcohol, and gasoline.

Water and Oil Repellent (Oil Resistant) Functions

Comparison water repellency tests between textile treated by AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ and untreated fabric are shown in the video. And comparison grease proof properties tests between paper boats treated by AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ and untreated paper boats are also shown in the video.

SR (Stain Release) Functions

AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ also includes SR (stain release) products which can easily remove stains from textiles during washing.
Comparison SR properties tests between textiles treated by AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ and untreated fabrics are shown in the video.

Outstanding Stain Resistance

Since the AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ can provide outstanding water and oil repellency to various types of textiles, it can give them excellent stain resistance (preventing various type of stains). It can prevent stains from not only water-soluble liquids (such as water, coffee, or milk) but also highly-active and aggressive liquids such as oil, alcohol, and gasoline.

AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ for Food Packaging

AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ is a grease-proof agent for paper, making it highly suitable for paper food packaging applications. It is exceptionally effective while meeting customers' environmental goals.
Without losing the appearance and inherent breathability of paper, it can provide outstanding oil resistance and water resistance to paper and cardboard. The paper treated by AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ is well-suited to packaging applications for food items and other products containing oils and fats, including confections, dairy products, side dishes, frozen food products, fast food, and pet food.

1. Outstanding oil resistance

Compared to other non-fluorine oil resistant processing agents, the properties of fluorine allows excellent oil resistance even with only small dosage.

2. Grease-proof even in edges and folding points, also preventing pinhole issues

Since AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ is treated on each single fiber of paper, fluorinated oil resistant paper has grease-proof properties not only the surface but also at edges and folding parts, which are the weak points for lamination and coating. Also, since the treatment is not a physical coating that merely “fills in the holes”, pinhole issues are less likely to occur.

3. Excellent heat resistance allowing use even at high temperatures

Grease-proof paper treated by AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ has heat resistant properties and is registered as a food contact substance suitable for heating applications*, allowing it to be used even at temperatures higher than 130°C.
*Registered by Germany’s BfR XXXVI/2 Paper and paper board for baking purposes. Also adopted Food Sanitation Law Notification by Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry (Japan: Other synthesized resin (General Standard) over 100°C)

4. Usable in microwave oven susceptor heating packaging

Since it has excellent performance at high temperatures and is registered for use in microwave oven susceptor heating packaging by the U.S. FDA, it can be used in packaging for popcorn, pizzas, or other food products intended for preparation in a microwave oven.

5. Able to preserve the inherent characteristics of paper, including its breathability and texture

Grease-proof paper treated with the AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ prevents the penetration of oil and water while allowing the passage of vapor and steam. AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ can prevent food contents from becoming soaked with moisture.
AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ can also prevent condensation from steam in containers made of cardboard or other materials, keeping the packaging from losing its shape.

6. Outstanding release properties

The extraordinary characteristics of fluorine can provide release properties to paper treated with the AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™. AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ can therefore be applied to prevent the adhesion of food products or as release paper/liners.

7. Good printing and adhesive properties for food packaging

Grease-proof paper treated with the AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ is extremely well-suited to printing and bonding during post-processing.

8. Excellent suitability to converting (bag-forming properties), and filling properties

Grease-proof paper treated with the AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ preserves the outstanding properties of paper, such as its breathability and strength.

9. Contributions to the environment and recycling

By eliminating the process of lamination, paper treated by AsahiGuard E-SERIES ™ can be recycled in the same way as untreated paper. Total package costs will be reduced since over-packaging is reduced. Applying its high oil resistance (preventing pinhole issues, excellent oil resistance even at folding part and edge) can make conventional lamination and acrylic processing unnecessary.

Environmentally-friendly

AGC is always working on product improvements. In the past we developed new technologies to improve the environmental performance of our products. Our innovations include:
- Low VOC products
- APEO-free products
- PFOA-free products (at or above detection limits)

Our activities to address PFOA Issues

As we enter the twenty-first century, research and efforts to protect the environment continue on a global basis.
Some of the residual products in conventional fluorinated water/oil repellent agents (such as PFOS and PFOA) and their decomposition products have been found to be environmentally-persistent. In response, AGC developed the AsahiGuard E-SERIES, which is PFOA-free (at or above detection limits).
AGC finished 100% conversion to C6 technology 3 years ahead of the 2015 goal.

Certification and Registration as a Chemical Substance in Various Countries

Registered as a chemical substance in Japan, AsahiGuard E-SERIES is registered in many other countries including the United States, Europe, and Asia. For details, please inquire with us. (click here)

Textile-Related Certification→bluesign® standard

bluesign® standard is an industry standard designed to provide solutions from the perspectives of the environment, health, and safety (EHS). The strength of this approach is that in order for relevant parties to join together to reduce environmental impacts and develop a sound and responsible textile industry, connections are built among raw material supply manufacturers, textile production manufacturers, retail companies, and apparel brands.
AGC is the first Japanese company to be a bluesign® system partner.
